A long trip down the memory lane (2)

Hartford riverfront at night (6/9/2007) - 2 of unknown in the series

- Captured on 6/9/2007, these are pictures of the Hartford riverfront, Hartford, Connecticut, US of A. No comments here but the obvious thing you might notice in these pictures is they are captured at the highest ISO setting on a Canon Powershot A520 - no inbuilt noise reduction and no post-processing edits.

Can you see the "Bank of America" in the backdrop?

Best regards!

A long trip down the memory lane (1)

A view from my apartment window (12/22/2006) - 1 of unknown in the series

What I stumbled upon today is going to be a trip down the memory lane. The first post in this series of my memories from the past - I start here today, not knowing where I'll finish, but there's so much to walk you through!

With a 10 second exposure this picture was taken using my first digital camera (Canon A510) way back in 12/22/2006 - its a view from my apartment window on a cold foggy night. Hope you like the first one in this series.

Best regards!

Completely out of context!

Yes .. this one's totally out of context because its not about photography. It's a poem I wrote ages ago; just happened to stumble upon it .. Happy reading -

The peppy parrot that pooped!

 Once upon a time …
There was a peppy parrot that pooped.
He was green and his nose red,
He pooped everywhere but not on bed.
We called him Jimmy and he would eat anything that was cooked
But what he loved most was butter and bread.

My mom gave him cheese one day
Oh boy, he was so gay!
He would run back and forth and all around the table
But wouldn’t let the cheese go away

Daddy would come home from office
And give him something sweet.
Oh Jimmy, it was such a treat!
Children from neighborhood would come home and the house would chime,
Evening was fun and he would always be on cloud nine.

He knew how to speak
How to shriek and how to squeak
He knew Hindi coz that’s what we speak!

Oh I forgot, he knew English
Geez! he was so stylish
Every morning he would say – “Papa, how do you do?”
He wouldn’t say this to you, no matter what you do!

We all loved him so much.
Sometimes he would make us go crazy,
Jimmy, you were such a cute baby.

It was one cold winter night,
And everyone was inside, sleepin’ tight.
Jimmy was outside braving the weather,
Warm though with all his feathers.

We don’t know what he saw that made him shriek,
Mom came out and he looked a total freak.
She held him in her hands and he almost froze,
Mom took him inside and kept him close.

Night passed and the sun rose,
Mom still kept him close.
He didn’t eat, so she got her milk and bread.
The day passed but he wouldn’t speak
God help! Mom said – “baby, you are so weak”

Dusk came and you could see the fright
The weather was cold and mom kept him close all night.

It was dawn and a new day had come,
But the sun had set for Jimmy - my son.
We didn’t know what to do,
Jimmy didn’t say to daddy - “Papa, how do you do?”

I know you are sorry,
Believe me, I didn’t make this up
It’s a true story.
We buried him in our backyard
Jimmy is dead, but he still lives in our heart.

Best regards!

Candid photography

The least understood and the most misinterpreted term in photography that I've noticed by far is "Candid photography".

Candid photography means taking pictures of people when they are acting naturally. The dictionary defines Candid as meaning: “Informal; Unposed.” So essentially, it means taking a picture of someone just being themselves. The answer to what is candid photography is that simple!

Here is a simple rule of thumb in answering what is candid photography: If someone could say “Cheese” and take a picture, it’s not a candid.

A little more understanding of how it is different -
The clearest contrast is between a portrait and a candid photo. For example, with portrait photography, someone is posing, they are aware of the camera, and the photographer may be asking them to make a specific face. In contrast, with a candid photograph, the subject may not even be aware of the camera, or they may not have a chance to compose themselves.

Here's a link to a pre-wedding shoot I did for a couple recently (most of the pictures if you notice, in here, are candid) - https://www.flickr.com/photos/jazzypicsnpixels/sets/72157644173822651/show/

SEO?

yes ... that's what SEO is for .. SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization and I continue this post of mine from where I left in the previous post.

The concept:
Search engines (and I'll take Google as an example) crawl the web pages of sites on the internet to discover content and to generate results when you hit the SEARCH button after entering the search criteria. Visit wiki to get a better understanding - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization

While I won't go through the specifics of what I did, it took around 3-4 days trying to optimize the website I created for search engines. I want to mention that http://seositecheckup.com/ helped a lot in generating SEO score and gave enough feedback on how to improve.

Hope this gives you a fair idea of how I setup www.jazzypicsnpixels.com

www.jazzypicsnpixels.com

So I thought today that I'll give you a background of www.jazzypicsnpixels.com

While the idea of buying a domain name was Gurneet's, the ownership of setting it up from scratch was mine. The whole idea was to showcase my photography work to the world out there!

With that idea in my head, a template from sitebuilder in GoDaddy, some great pictures and my know-how of HTML, I put up some very basic stuff on the web to begin with. The foundation, I must say, along with well structured ideas and baby steps helped me put up a site which now looks like –

Am I going to discuss HTML with you now? Naaaah! Just want to put down some stuff that might help others thinking on the same lines, to implement, if not better, a similar website on their own.
So …

  • the structure of the site can very well be changed; what GoDaddy gives you is just a template – go ahead and customize it based on your ideas/thoughts.
  • my GoDaddy package is a basic one and doesn’t give me only 1 GB storage space for all the pictures that I take. BAD!!! Solution? – I setup a flickr account which gives me 1TeraByte of data storage free! Isn’t that great? I’m sure you won’t need more than 1TB of space to save your pictures.
  • Daddy’s all setup – I mean the basic stuff is out there with content and page structure already provided by the template.
  • Next Q – how you let people know that you’ve started a new venture? Here are some of the ways to go about it:
  • use your social network; don’t have one? OOOOOOOPS .. start building one! I deleted my old facebook account and created a new one – just to use as a weapon for selling my stuff.
  • next: start posting on your social network – twitter, google, facebook etc. Even if your posts are redundant and have to talk about the same thing over and over again, it doesn’t matter!
  • eventually: make you start doing changes to the site in bits and pieces and letting people know “what has changed since the last time they visited”
  • what’s more important to know now, is that, there are search engines on the web which in technical terms “crawl” your website. Know of google or yahoo or bing? Yes, they are primarily search engines.
How the hell do you let the search engines know that you want them to crawl all the pages in  your website, index it and so people are able to reach to your website when do a search?

I’ll answer this part of the question in my next post …

4 years later!

Here I am ... after my last post on Sunday, January 3, 2010 called 'Transition to 2010', it has been 4 years now and I'm posting again!

Being the first post in 2014, I'll just talk about how the year started - oh happy new year folks! The new year brought some good news in and I earned two certifications - PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner from Project Management Institute, US). have been out hunting and shunting for a while but no success so far.

So the next good thing that happened in Jan was that I bought a domain name with GoDaddy. I proudly say that www.jazzypicsnpixels.com was setup as a result of my efforts. I also did Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and got some visitors to my website. More details in my next posts....
